Hillsborough County Fair Expands To Two Weekends
The 21st edition of the annual Hillsborough County Fair will expand to two weekends in 2014. The fair opens Thursday October 23 and runs through October 26. It will reopen Thursday October 30 and run through November 2, at the County Fairgrounds just east of Brandon on Highway 60. This year will feature an expanded schedule of excitement in the 1,800 seat outdoor arena.
Two nights of Ranch Rodeo will return Friday October 24 and Saturday October 25 @ 7 pm. Real Ranch hands compete in wild cow milking, bronc riding, branding, trailer loading, and mutton busting for the children. Sunday afternoon October 26 will feature Mexican Bull Riding and Fiesta at 3:00 pm. The following Friday night, October 31 will be high speed and high energy with the Bulls and Barrels Rodeo @ 7pm. Competitors from throughout the Southeastern US will be on hand to compete. Dirt is going to fly and the smoke is going to be bellowing on Saturday, November 1, with another first for the Fair when it hosts the “Truck and Tractor Pull” competition @ 7 pm. The Fair will conclude with a “bang” with the first annual Demolition Derby @3 pm Sunday, November 2. Cars will crash and bash for the cash. Last car moving wins!!! Advance ticket purchase for any of the Arena events available at area merchants, will get the purchaser in the Fair free!
This year many events will be held under our new 20,000 square foot building with new restrooms. Livestock shows are a staple at the Fair every year, featuring Dairy, Beef, Goats, Sheep, Swine, Rabbit, Horse and Poultry Shows. Home Arts, canning, sewing, baking, fine art, photography and needlework is open to everyone, along with special “just for kids” competitions. The always interesting Recycled Yard Art completion returns. Beauty abounds in the Harvest Queen Pageant as the 2014 Queen and Junior Queen are chosen and begin their exciting reign. The Children's and Babies Pageant on Sunday, October 26 brings cuteness to an all time high. Then one week later on November 2 there will be lots of Mr. Cowboys and Miss Cowgirls strutting their stuff in the Western Wear Contest open for Ages 1 year to 18 years.
Free shows to the fairgoers include Robinson’s Racing Pigs and Pig Paddling Porkers, running and swimming to the finish line. The Firefighter Show provides a fun, entertaining and educational show for young and old alike and Herriot’s Family Fun Circus with horses, dogs and people performing to the delight of the crowds. Our Historical area continues to grow and will feature, Sugar Cane grinding and syrup making. The art of charcoal making will be demonstrated. Visit our brand new Blacksmith Shop. The area will be rounded out with old engines and machinery of yesteryear. Round Bale Decorating, Bullwhip Cracking, FFA/4-H Day, Youth Beef Cooking Contest and a Youth Horticulture show, and the 17th annual Teenage Battle of the Bands round out some of the youth competitions.
Arnold’s Amusements return with the spectacular family oriented ride midway. Wristbands Ride specials are available each day of the Fair. The Bay Area Bandits Mounted Shooters will perform in the arena on Saturday morning October 25. Come see the mounted shooting excitement of the old west in action! It’s Free! A fair visit isn’t complete without enjoying your favorite fair food – sausage, fries, elephant ears, roasted corn, corn dogs, deep fried Oreos - just to name a few.
